John Murray, 1897, 1st edition. Cloth, VG. x+279pp, engraved frontis, 2 b/w plates, 5 maps four of which are coloured & folding ( plus an additional map of Chitral & Afghan frontier districts tipped in ) index, occasional foxing to the text with the endpapers & fore edges more heavily foxed, cloth bright but with the spine sunned, a nice copy. The silk bands which form part of the binding are in Owen's racing colours. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ A biography of Edward Roderic Owen [ 1856 - 1896 ] champion jockey & soldier. His racing career came to a splendid conclusion by winning the 1892 Grand National on `Father O'Flynn'. Days later he was bound for Africa, seeing action in Nigeria ( Jebu War ) Uganda, Sudan, India & Afghanistan & Egypt. It was in Egypt that he died, succumbing to Cholera.
