Tight and nice first edition of this hefty biography of the Encyclopaedia Britannica publisher (1943-73) and United States senator from Connecticut (1949-53). From the library of U.S. Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), son of Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II -- both long-time friends of Benton. Governor Stevenson first befriended Benton in the 1940s and they had numerous interactions over the years, including traveling together through South America (pictured in this book). Adlai II makes many appearances in Hyman's book. Tipped to inner flyleaf is a sheet of Senator Stevenson's engraved Chicago letterhead. .
