BROUGHAM, Henry - Historical Sketches of Statesmen Who Flourished in the Time of George III. Second Series

 1554314776,
Philadelphia, Lea & Blanchard, 1839. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Brown cloth. 196pp. Very good. Rebacked, with original spine cloth remounted; internally tight, though mildly foxed and age toned throughout. Decently tight and handleable first edition of the second volume (out of two) only from the "Second Series" of this four-volume set. Interesting provenance: Top of front flyleaf bears pencilled ownership signature of "L.W. Green" -- Letitia Green Stevenson (1843-1913), wife of Grover Cleveland's Vice President, Adlai E. Stevenson I, and thus Second Lady from 1893-97. Below this is the huge ownership signature in brown ink of her sister, Julia Green Scott (1839-1923), who adds "Bloomington / Illinois" below -- Bloomington civic leader and president of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Below this is a third ownership signature (significance unknown). Julia Green Scott also pens "Mrs. Scott" on front pastedown and lightly pencils "Mrs. M.T. Scott" on rear pastedown (husband Matthew T. Scott, 1828-91, was a noted Bloomington real estate developer who partnered with Adlai I in business and founded a local newspaper). Rear flyleaf bears yet another related ownership signature, a pencilled Malinda Smith. Smith (1833-1908) was married to Charles Henry Vrooman (1828-67); Vrooman was a relative of Carl Schurz Vrooman (1872-1976), who married Julia Green Scott's namesake daughter (1876-1981). .
