Smith H., Dorman C.J., Dougan G., Holden D.W. & Williams P. (Eds), - The activities of bacterial pathogens in vivo - Papers of a discussion meeting

2000. Issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society - Biological Sciences vol. 355 n. 1397. In 4to, broch., pp. 166 with ills. Contain 14 contributions. The meeting was held in October 1999 in London to explore new methods of studying the activities of bacteria that cause disease in their natural settings--hosts--rather than in laboratories. Contributors discuss bacterial and host factors that operate in vivo to bring about sickness, how phenomena recognized in vitro relate to behavior in vivo, and how to acquire any relevant evidence that is not now available. After a broad introduction, the 14 papers examine the new methods themselves, their impact, and their potential applications. Some of them focus on a particular pathogen, but more often they cite several to illustrate more general topics.
