 1554338589,
New York, 1876. 1 sheet. 8 x 11 inches. Issued Wednesday, March 1, 1876, at 1 pm. S.B. Downes & Co, established in 1869, would later become well known for the case Downes v. Bidwell, 182 U.S. 244 (1901), in which US Supreme Court decided whether US territories were subject to the provisions and protections of the US Constitution, as Downes, who owned S. B. Downes & Company sued George R. Bidwell, the US customs inspector for the port of New York because he was charged duty on oranges the company had imported into the Port of New York from the newly-acquired territory of Puerto Rico. There are oranges on this list, but alas, they are from Florida. Very good, folded, edge worn, small piece clipped from top edge.
