J.F. BENNET - Bennet's Illustrated London Plan of London. Plan Showing Theatres, Music Halls, Museums, &c. &c.

J.E. Bennet, c. 1912? Colour printed map, mounted on linen, 320 x 610 mm. with the addition of braille and other tactile additions, a little creased and worn. Presumably based on an earlier map which has not been fully updated: the Coronation Exhibition [opened 1911] is marked, but the Victoria & Albert Museum is still named as the South Kensington Museum [name changed in 1899]. Here the map has been enhanced for the use of the blind and partially sighted by the addition of stuck on and sewn on additions: Rivers and waterways are outlined with a twisted thread> parkland by a network of fine threads, and street and building names by stuck on paper patches of braille. Obviously not commercially produced, this may have been especially created for a single person, or perhaps for use by a school for the blind.
