GODBEY, ALLEN HOWARD - What Rabbi Yeshua' Thought of Soldiers, and Ante-Nicene Christian Soldiers - Includes Letter Signed by Godbey

Durham, North Carolina: Christian Printing Company, 1941. First Edition. Pamphlet. Godbey relies upon his extensive biblical knowledge to explain what Yeshua' (Jesus) thought of honest soldiers. The publication date of this thirty-page stapled booklet is particularly noteworthy as it came only two months before the United States entered WWII. Laid-in is a one-page mimeographed copy of a letter Godbey enclosed when he sent copies of this booklet to four Methodist bishops. At the top of the letter Godbey has handwritten and signed a note to the recipient of this copy, one M.B. Rohner(?). The letter explains that the Ante-Nicene section of this booklet was "prepared primarily for Army Chaplains' needs, was warmly commended in its typed form by several Army chaplains, including the office of the Chief of chaplains, and that they would like to have it available in quantity in every camp." Godbey [1864-1948] was a professor of the Old Testament at Duke University from 1826 until his retirement in 1932. He wrote several books, perhaps the most noteworthy of these being "The Lost Tribes - A Myth". A fascinating Godbey artifact sure to be of great interest to those interested in the Christian attitude toward military service, particularly with a view to recruitment, especially at the onset of WWII. Booklet and letter clean and unmarked with light wear.; 8vo. Very Good .
