Invitation to join the Authors' League (currently known as the Authors Guild) formed three year earlier to protect the copyright interests of creators. Sent to artist Alexander Schilling dated December 31st, 1915 and signed by nine council members: Louis Joseph Vance (1879-1933), novelist, screenwriter and film producer who created Michael Lanyard, a criminal-turned-detective known as The Lone Wolf. George Barr McCutcheon (1866-1928) was an American novelist, author of Brewster's Millions. Bayard Veiller (1869-1943) American screenwriter, producer and film director. Margaret Mayo (1882-1951) American actress, playwright, and screenwriter. Jesse Lynch Williams (1871-1929) was an American dramatist awarded the first Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1918. Gertrude Franklin Horn Atherton (1857-1948) wrote the bestseller Black Oxen (1923) Rex Ellingwood Beach (1877 -1949) novelist, playwright, Olympic water polo player. Ellis Parker Butler (1869-1937) author of short story "Pigs Is Pigs". Kate Jordan (23 December (1862-1926) was an Irish-American novelist. Currently known as the Authors Guild, the Authors' League was organized in 1912, in New York, to "to protect the rights of all authors, whether engaged in literary, dramatic, artistic, or musical competition, and to advise and assist all such authors". At the time of this letter, the League's President was Winston Churchill, and the Vice-President was Theodore Roosevelt. Alexander Schilling (1859-1937) a landscape painter and etcher, once apprentice to Henry Elkins, help found the Chicago Art League and was a member of the American Watercolor Society.
