The half-title page is handsomely inscribed and signed by the author in black ink: "For John G. Oien / with Kindest regards / Benjamin P. Thomas." Thomas (1902-56) was an American historian and author known for "Lincoln's New Salem" (1934) and mainly for "Abraham Lincoln" (1952), for many years the standard one-volume life of the president; upon learning of a cancer diagnosis he committed suicide.
