BULLOCK, A.M. - Headlights of American History. No. 2. Lincoln

 1554313181,
Appleton, WI, A.M. Bullock, 1913. Hardcover. 16mo. Green cloth with gilt lettering and circular front board printed image inset into circular gilt "headlight." 156pp. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece, illustrations. Near fine. Wonderfully and unusually bright and tight first edition of this little beauty, one of the most attractive early 20th century Lincoln titles of all -- and one of the few that can claim to be early automotive inspired, the front cover headlight a clear reference to the then-new horseless carriage. Front flyleaf bears handsomely inked Christmas 1913 gift inscription from a William S. Crowther (born 1843), a prominent Wisconsin businessman and chairman of the Ripon Historical Society (considered by some the birthplace of the Republican Party) and amateur historian known for having one of the finest Lincoln collections in the country at that time. The first title in this "Headlights" series was devoted to George Washington, and it's possible that no further titles appeared. Seldom seen in such choice condition, with gilt that makes you shield your eyes. MONAGHAN 2072. .
