BULLARD, Robert Lee (1861-1947) - Inscription and Signature This long-serving U.S. Army officer is most noted for commanding "The Big Red One" -- the 1st Infantry Division -- during the successful Battle of Cantigny in World War One; although in the Battle of Montfalcon his refusal to obey orders cost the 79th Division huge casualties. Attractive "Signature / Yours sincerely, / Robert Lee Bullard / Lt. Gen. Rtd." penned on a buff heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" penny postcard, n.p. (postal cancellation Grand Central Annex, NY), n.y. (postal cancellation 13 January 1934. Near fine. Address portion boldly addressed in Bullard's hand to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). .
