POTTER, John - Reminiscences of the CIVIL War in the United States

 1554312935,
Oskaloosa, IA, The Globe Presses, 1897. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Pebble-grained blind-ruled black cloth with gilt spine lettering. 196pp. Frontispiece. Very good. Tight, clean, attractive first edition of this slim war memoir by this soldier with the 101st Illinois Volunteers, in later years a pastor with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Iowa. Title continues: "Including Also an Account of a Visit to the Battle Grounds of Tennessee and Georgia in 1895, and a Memorial Sermon, Preached at Montezuma, Iowa, May 26th, 1895." Scarce, especially in this nice condition. James I. Robertson Jr. offers a critique typical of that of many a small-time war participant: "Potter had a penchant for describing in detail small, isolated incidents which he beheld; his memoir as a whole is a disappointment." NEVINS I, 148. .
