With a concise account of phonology and inflexions of the Middle English period. Eminent self-taught philologist Joseph Wright, established the scientific study of dialect in Britain. Along with many grammars and other works on early English, Wright's greatest achievement was the six-volume English Dialect Dictionary which has not yet been superseded. His wife Elizabeth Mary collaborated with him on a number of books and also published separately: 'Rustic Speech and Folklore' in 1913.
