HART Douglas A - Strategic Planning in London: The Rise and Fall of the Primary Road Network

Oxford, Pergamon Press 1976 xiii, 237pp, [1] 22x15, crimson cloth, glt lettering on black background. Two neat stamps on ffep and half title, slight foxing to edges not impacting pages, very good thus. Fascinating study of the proposed network of motorways round and through London, first formally codified in Abercrombie's London Plan and then pursued by successive local and national governments before eventually being abandoned in 1973 as pressure to reduce traffic rather build more roads became impossible to ignore. The central thesis is that the road system was part of a classical approach to the 'ordering' of cities that existed long before the London Plan and persisted longer than was realised.
