TOLLER, T[homas] N[orthcote] - Outlines of the History of the English Language: The Cambridge Series for Schools and Training Colleges. Toller's Presentation Copy to His Wife Edith (Daughter of Benson Rathbone, Cotton Broker of Liverpool).

Cambridge, at the University Press, 1900. Small 8vo in original blue cloth, spine lettered gilt, title within decorative border and C.U.P. crest blind stamped to upper board. Charming decorative inscription to preliminary page: "Edith Toller from T T Dec 1900". In very good condition, clean and tight. Faint unobtrusive stain to upper board. "Thomas Northcote was a professor of English; indeed, he was the first professor of that subject when the Manchester University was established, in 1880.. Thomas was born in Kettering.. 1844. His father, Joseph, was a bookseller and printer with a shop in the Market Place.. Professor Toller and Edith (née Rathbone) were married in the Toxteth Park area of Liverpool.. 1889. Edith Rathbone was the daughter of Benson Rathbone, a very wealthy cotton broker in Liverpool. She (had been widow) to The Hon. Henry Romilly". (Tony Goulding 2022).
