Gusev-Orenburgsky, a former Orthodox priest, was the first person to write an honest account of the 1919-1920 pogroms. Only after he fled to Harbin could he get 'The Crimson Book: Pogroms of 1919-120 in Ukraine' published. The present title, published in Russian in 1905, is an acute satire of Russian provincial life on the eve of the First Revolution.
