From: Het gezantschap der Neêrlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie, aan den grooten Tartarischen Cham, den tegenwoordigen keizer van China. - Joan Nieuhof (1618-1672) was a servant of the East India Company (VOC). The illustrations of Nieuhof's embassy to Peking were one inspiration for chinoiserie which became especially popular in the 18th century.
