Walter Simon was born in Berlin in 1893. His work in the 1920s and '30s focused mostly on Chinese historical phonology. Simon and his family fled to London in 1936 where he both studied and worked at the School of Oriental Studies. Best known for his work on Chinese, he was a Tibetologist as well as a Sinologist.
