La BRUYERE, Jean de - Les Caracteres de la Bruyere Accompagnes Des Caracteres de Theophraste Du Discours a L'Academie Francaise D'Une Notice Sur la Bruyere

Paris, Charpentier, Libraire-Editeur, 1869. Hardcover. 12mo. Quarter calf with raised bands and gilt spine lettering and red marbled paper over boards. xvi, 540pp. Very good. Mild wear to calf, though internally near fine. Tight, superb "Edition Variorum" with index by Charles Louandre in handsome custom binding. Jean de la Bruyere (1645-96) was a French philosopher and moralist best remembered for this 1688 thinly-veiled "fiction," often expanded in later editions. From the library of Wisconsin civic leader JAMES M. LYNCH, chief clerk at the Adjutant General's Office during the Civil War, appointed quartermaster general in 1865; half-title page bears a light pencilled gift inscription to "J.M. Lynch from his / friend / J.J.L. / 1872." A lovely copy. .
