Brehm, [A. E.] and T. F. Zimmermann - Bilder und Skizzen aus dem Zoologischen Garten zu Hamburg.

Hamburg, M. H. W. Lührsen, 1865. 8vo (22.8 x 14.8 cm). vi, 283 pp., wood-engraved, tissue-guarded frontispiece, eight wood-engraved plates by Zimmermann and 17 large text figures. Contemporary marbled boards; spine with green calf label with gilt ornamental bands and title. = Rare only edition of this work on the zoological garden of Hamburg - published two years after its opening - by the great German naturalist and promotor of natural history, Alfred Edmund Brehm (1829-1884), who was the first director of the zoo. Brehm was for Germany what Buffon was for France; the epitome of nature writings - a (semi) popular natural history book could not do without his surname in the title. This work, however, is one of the few really written by Brehm himself. Zimmermann was the illustrator. Text in Fraktur. Some rubbing to the boards, a few, isolated, spots (apparently cleaner than usual), otherwise a very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 563.
