First edition, hardcover in blue cloth and gold gilt lettering (12 3/4 x 10”, 32 x 25 cm) with dust jacket, 126pp. A special number of the XXe siecle Art series published under the direction of G. di San Lazzaro and printed in Italy. This tribute contains thirty-two colour reproductions and one hundred and fifty in black and white. Most noteworthy is an original linocut print shown exclusively in this special number of XX Siecle. This book contains a complete overview of Matisse’s oeuvre accompanied by numerous essays in French from colleagues and friends including G. di San Lazzaro, Georges Rouault, Roger Fry, Herbert Read, and many others. This copy is still crisp and in fine condition, the dust jacket alone showing some very light wear. A wonderful homage in image and print to the master with the notable addition of an original Matisse linocut print!.
