Jan / Johan van Galen (1604 -1653) was mortally wounded during the naval Battle of Livorno / Leghorn which took place on 4 March 1653 during the First Anglo-Dutch War, near Livorno, Italy. It was a victory of a Dutch fleet under Commodore Johan van Galen over an English squadron under Captain Henry Appleton. Added an engraved oval potrait of Jan van Galen by J. Houbraken.
