GRILL, Christoph - Christoph Grill - Short stalks at distant shores imaging Post-Soviet space. With essays by Ulf Brunnbauer / Christoph Grill / Ulrich Tragatschnig. [New].

Ostfildern, Hatje Cantz, 2012. 28.5 x 34.5 cm. 192 pp. Cloth. Illustrated in b/w and colour throughout. - Text in English and German. - Between 1999 and 2000, Austrian photographer Christoph Grill documented the sweeping change in the successor states of the Soviet Union following their independence. His photographs of Albania, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan show an unsentimental view of everyday life: children playing amid the ruins of communist utopias, triumphal ararches in the middle of nowhere, grass growing in the cracks of military parade grounds. Grill's photographic notes locate the things seen on his travels, the people he encountered, and their will to survive, especially in the face of striking symptoms of decline. - New copy
