NAVIER Louis Marie Henri : - Rapport à Monsieur Becquey....et Mémoire sur les ponts suspendus.

Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1823, in-4°, 30 x 22 cm, xxiv + 228 pp + 13 folding plates , contemporary half roan, marbled boards, smooth gilt spine, binding with some wear at spine and corners, folding plates with some slight foxing and dustsoiled margins, otherwise a fine copy. This is the first design manual on suspension bridges. It is divided into three parts; (1) an historical survey covering bridges built and projected ; (2) a comprehensive treatment of the static and dynamic characteristics of suspension bridges ; (3) the author's two designs, an aquaduct and the Pont des Invalides in Paris. Navier made two journeys to England and had contacts with Samuel Brown and Marc Brunel. This publication is the result of these travels. There was a second enlarged edition in 1830.
