Lyon, Seb. Gryphium [Sebastian Gryphius], 1554. 397 pp. Handcolored copper-engraved printers-device, many (some handcolored) initials & small handcoloured illustration of a gryphon on the last page. Original blindstamped and decorated pig-skin. 8vo. - Corners & spine very sl. worn; covers sl. soiled, lacking first endpaper, many annotations, underlinings in a contemporary hand, small fragments missing of the margins of p. 149 & p. 152.* Attractive and early edition of Ovid's: art of love, in a so-called: monestary-binding, many early 16th century annotations (pen-practice) on the endpapers, underlinings and annotations throughout. Even censorship of a previous owner was applied by a later owner, there are still parts visible of a small drawing that the former had made in the margins with pen (a love-making couple) a later-owner cut out the confronting depiction. The binding is profusely decorated with rolled-stamped imagery such as saints, the signs of the evangelists & the year 1605.
