Contemporary half calf, flat spine decorated in gilt and with title label, gilt and marbled deges, extremities rubbed, binding shaken with front hinge cracked. First German edition, which is an abridgement from the original English (1843). The beautiful steel engravings are made from drawings by Thomas Allom who copied Chinese drawings from Sir George Thomas Staunton's collection and also made use of amateur sketches made by others.
