Engraved Title page with vignette, engraved ded. leaf, numerous vignettes, 2 pedigrees on 1 fold out, 26 plates including 7 hand cold. and 1 sepia, engraved fly t.p. to ‘ Observations ..’ Prelims. lightly browned, light age toning, marbled e.ps., contemporary gilt rule edged calf with marbled boards, some minor wear to boards, dec. gilt raised bands with gilt lettered title label to sl. rubbed spine, extemities sl. rubbed, t.e.g. ¶ Ex-libris Mary Sophia Johnston (1875-1955), Geologist and Photographer who left a legacy of £1,000 to the Palaeontographical Society. During her lifetime she donated her collections of invertebrate fauna to the British Museum of Natural History (now the Natural History Museum), including specimens of foraminfera (single-celled organisms with an internal shell found abundantly as fossils) and bryzoa (microscopic aquatic invertebrates that live in colonies).
