Allen Hazen in his Samuel Johnson's Prefaces and Dedications (1937) attributed the dedication to Samuel Johnson, though R. W. Chapman in his Johnsonian Bibliography: A Supplement to Courtney (1939) disputed the attribution. Johnson also had the pleasure of reviewing the translation in The Literary Magazine in 1756.
