This famous picture illustrates a moment from the seminal event in the history of Eastern Cape settlement: the landing of the first sizable contingent of English settlers on the subcontinent. At the foot of the rise above the Bay are the tents that would shelter the 1820 Settlers temporarily, along with the wagons for their conveyance to the hinterland. The flag of the garrison at Fort Frederick is visible at the crest of the hill overlooking the scene. In the foreground, lighters laden with Settler men, women and children are battling through the waves from the notoriously unsafe anchorage. Cormorants soar above the waves, and swoop down. A breathtaking scene.
