First edition, tight and nice, of the prolific historian's last book -- and bearing a fine autograph addition: Tipped to the half-title page is a 6¼" X 3¼" Christmas card sent by McMurtry in 1956 to noted Lincoln scholar ARNOLD F. GATES (1914-93). Front panel is a fine copperlate etching of a woodsy rural winter scene, while below the printed message on the inside panel McMurtry signs large and bold in blue ballpoint. McMurtry (1906-88) directed the Louis A. Warren Lincoln Library and Museum from 1956 to 1973 and wrote more than 200 articles, pamphlets and books about Lincoln. .
