Galpin, George Luck. - The Family of Galpin of Staffordshire & Dorset.

George Luck Galpin (1857-1941) was the fifth of six sons of Henry Carter Galpin (b. 1820) who came to South Africa in 1848, moving to Grahamstown the next year to set up business as a watchmaker and jeweller. His house, in Bathurst Street, with its camera obscura, is presently a museum. George Luck Galpin was schooled at St Andrews in Grahamstown. He then went to England where he qualified first as a dentist and then as a surgeon. Returning to South Africa he practised as a surgeon (F.R.C.S.) in Port Elizabeth from 1885 to 1912. This work records in detail the early family history in England up to Henry Carter Galpin, and is replete with illustrations, detailed notes, arms. etc.
