The greatest sculptor of Classicism, Antonio Canova (1757-1822), was admired around 1800 primarily for his sculptures of mythological themes, which exemplify the changes in the era's understanding of myth. This publication traces the dense tension between the transmission of myth in classical literature, the literary reinterpretation of Canova's time, and the tradition of pictorial art. These changes in the canon and understanding of pictorial themes at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries arose from personal contacts, which are reconstructed here for the first time using Canova's extensively preserved letters. - Text in German.
