KATSOURIS, A.G., - Linguistic and Stylistic Characterization. Tragedy and Menander.

University of Ioannina, Ioannina, 1975. 211p. Sewn. Some reviews loosely inserted. With author's dedication on free endpaper. Series: University of Ioannina, Philological Periodical of the School of Philosophy, Dodone: Supplement No. 5. (Rare). "'The best and perhaps most original chapter is the third and last, in which K. assembles a number of linguistic and stylistic techniques common to tragedy and New Comedy. Among them may be noted clusters of associated words, the repeated use of a word in connection with some character, individual speech habits, repetition by a character of the word 'ego' (...) He also points out a way in which scenes are joined verbally (...). There are some interesting remarks on self-apostrophe (...). Finally there is a long and useful section on mythological parallels in tragedy and comedy, which collects all the material; he deals prudently with the question to what extent those in comedy imply knowledge of tragedies which treated the stories referred to. An appendix of eleven pages clearly tabulates the mythological allusions in Middle and New Comedy with their possible sources in tragedy.' (F.H. SANDBACH in Journal of Hellenic Studies, 1979, p.181). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott."
