An anti-Catholic book by political activist and eventual advisor to Lincoln's presidential cabinet, Anna Carroll of Maryland. Carroll wrote anti-slavery pamphlets, was part of the American or "Know-Nothing" party in the 1850s, and opposed European Catholic immigration in part because immigrants were seen as competitors for jobs held by free Black citizens in industrial areas. Carroll also expresses suspicion that the pope had ambition for temporal power in the United States. Good .
