The plates comprise one of colours and two of uniform (1713 and 1866). Carter was Cannon's assistant in the compilation of the latter's well-known 'Historical Records' series. At Cannon's retirement Carter was considered as editor but the Treasury elected to discontinue the series and Carter therefore published this work independently. Unsold copies were reissued in 1883 with an additional eight pages titled 'Conclusion of the Historical Record' and 24 coloured plates of uniform by Simkin. In this Second Issue the plate of 1713 is often missing. Very scarce. Sutcliffe, p.167; White, p.79.
