Munich, Germany, Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2003. Hardcover. red cloth boards w/ cream spine printing. 576 pgs w/ bw illustrations. red, glossy illustrated dustjacket. text in German. In 1432, Cardinal Giordano Orsini had his palace on Montegiordano in Rome equipped with a cycle of frescoes, which represented a world chronicle systematized according to six world ages in the form of a Uomini-Famosi series. The sequence of figures comprised about 400 people, beginning with Adam and Eve and ending with the Mongol Khan Tamerlane. The wall cycle already described by Filarete in his architectural treatise has not survived, but is fully known from six illustrated manuscripts and two manuscripts that contain the picture captions. The illuminated manuscripts can be functionally redefined: One manuscript served as a draft for the image program, another manuscript was available to the wall painters as a template for transferring to the wall. Image sources and literary models can be found in protagonist chronicles in the manner of Paolino Minorita, in illustrated chronicles prefixed genealogies as well as in world chronicles after Eusebius Hieronymus, in copy series and inventor catalogs. In its representative selection, the series of figures showed heroes who correspond to the image of man newly determined in early humanism, especially by Francesco Petrarca and Nicolaus Cusanus.--Amazon, translated.
