HAWKER, Vicar of Morwenstow R.S. - Footprints of Former Men in Far Cornwall. Edited with Introduction by C. E. Byles with Illustrations by J. Ley Pethybridge. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY

John Lane,, 1908. 8vo., on laid paper, with portrait frontispiece in photogravure, decorative title in red and black, and 18 plates, neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper, some light and occasional browning as often; original chocolate cloth elaborately embossed in blind, gilt back, gilt top, uncut, backstrip lightly chafed at extreme head and tail else very good, bright copy of an uncommon work. Hawker's most famous work comprises this collection of prose sketches, written originally for a variety of periodicals. First published in book form in 1870, they were re-issued in 1893 together with two previously unpublished essays 'Humphrey Vivian' and 'Old Trevarten' as 'The Prose Works of Rev. R.S. Hawker'. Hawker's close friend J.G. Godwin who added the bibliographical footnotes edited the reissue. The present edition enhances the work still further through the editorship of Byles, the charming illustrations by Pethybridge and plates and portraits from a variety of other sources (including Baring-Gould).
