1863. Paperback. 8p. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. An eight-page pamphlet in very good condition. Vertical creases down the middle of the front and back covers. Text unmarked and binding secure. Inscribed by the author on the front cover (signed "Hommage de l'Auteur"). In this essay, Francis Lieber (d. 1872), who authored the "Lieber Code" of conduct for Union soldiers during the Civil War, argues that slavery is an economically and socially damaging institution threatening the existence of small landowners. This copy is one of several printings from 1863. .
