Kiefer, 781: First book edition of Kolff's thesis (the only difference being a new printed title), in which he describes the invention, construction and use of the artificial kidney, with many case histories. The first announcement of this epoch making invention was made during the German occupation in 1944 in a Swedish periodical, consisting of 14 pp. After the 2nd World War Kolff emigrated to the USA. He taught at the University of Minnesota and at the University of Utah at Salt Lake City. Dr. Kolff is now 93 years of age. A biography was published recently [february 2004] and includes all the facts that led to the construction of a working model of the artificial kidney. Dr. Kollf was also at the forefront of research into the artificial heart, artificial limbs and indirectly the artificial eye.
