He was a professional soldier for thirty years being commissioned in the Black Watch in 1931. He recalls some of the journeys he has made including Antarcticia, Nigeria observing the Civil War, troubles in Algeria in 1959, cruising the South Pacific as Governor-General of New Zealand in 1964, and inadvertently taking part in anti-British demonstrations in Dalmatia.
