. Large folio. Size: 42.5 x 32 cm. Comprises twelve paintings on silk pasted on gilt speckled strong paper. Orihon bound. Each painting signed by Hôzan with artist's seal. Original silk padded boards, decorated in gilt, paper label (without title) on upper cover, gilt edges. A very exclusive and rare album with beautiful delicate pictures, painted in gentle colours, by a distinguished artist of that time. The illustrations depict: Two travelling sambaso dancers; Boys with kite; Ohara woman with horse; Women gathering shells; Children at play; Bijin on balcony; Country dancers; Woman carrying child; Woman beating cloth; Geisha and attendant; Boys and snow puppet; Man firing a kiln. Uejima Hôzan (1875-1920), was born in Kasaoka, Okayama. He moved to Osaka where he studied with Kimura Kanzan and Watanabe Shoeki. He was a skilled animal artist who excelled in bijin painting. When he died he was as famous as Uemura Sh›en (pseud. for Uemura Tsune) (1875-1949) but was soon unfairly forgotten, as he still is today.
