Frontis portrait by R. Grave. Engraved title. Heraldic device to printed t.p. 3-9/16" x 2-1/8". Some wear & soiling to binding. Paper title label chipped at top. "George's" bookseller label to front paste-down. Prior owner signature to ffep. Withal, a VG copy. Billed as a "typographical tour de force", the Diamond Classic series was Pickering's first strong push in the publishing business. Initially only the classic (in the sense of Greek/Roman) authors were issued; this later expanded to include Shakespeare, Milton, etc. This series also has the distinction of being one of the first publications to use binder's cloth. This title an early one from the series, which began in 1820, and continued through 1831.
