MANNERS (Catherine Rebecca Gray). Lady: - Poems by Lady Manners. [AKA Huntingtower (Catherine Rebecca Grey Talmash), Baroness)

London: Printed for John Booths..., 1794 8vo, 192 x 130 mms., pp. [vi], 152, original boards (probably later than 1794), uncut and unopened; a very good copy Catherine Rebecca Gray (or Grey), Lady Manners, later Lady Huntingtower (1766 - 1852) was born in Ireland; she married the Consevative politician William Manners in 1790. "The first collection of poems under Lady Manners' own name was published in 1790, and their author was described as 'having claims ... to the praise of harmony of verse and purity of sentiment ... not exceeded by those of any among her fair contemporaries'. Her poetry was popular during the early nineteenth century" (Wikipedia). If I remember correctly, the original unbound sheets of these poems were discovered in the 1970s and were bound and offered for sale by various booksellers. This one doesn't have the paper label that is found on some copies. The poems were first published in quarto in 1793.
