WOODS (George): - Poems Sacred and Miscellaneous.

London: Published by Baldwin and Cradock Paternoster-Row [colophon: Printed by John Ray at Barnsley ], 1828. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 196 x 128 mms., pp. [v] vi -vii, viii blank], 167 [168 blank], errata slip tipped in, engraved frontispiece, by Orlando Jewitt after William Cowen, original boards, uncut, paper label on spine, a bit soiled but a very good copy, with the contemporary signature "Robt Whitaker" on the top margin on the recto of the front free end-paper. The author's preface contains many of the tropes employed by authors concerned about the quality of their writing, e. g. "...few good or rather tolerable pieces..."; "they were chiefly composed at an age when we are supposed to be rather learning than teachijg..."; "Had he listened to the kind hints and good advice of many of his frienjds, he would have waited for a maturer age in which to give his lucubrations...."; "He did indeed hope that some of the harsh treatment to which he has been posed might have been spared, and that the lash would not have been inflicted before his crime had been made known...." The work is dedicated to the Revernd Rowland Ingram (1803 - 1880), the distinguished headmaster of the Grammar School at Giggleswick.
