. Tall 8vo. Pp. xxxix, 120. Interleaved copy. With some annotations. Contemporary half calf, rubbed, spine with red title label and initials F.A.H. in gilt at foot of spine. The N’ti-Nighanduva is a Sinhalese law book which mainly deals with marriage and inheritance laws. The kingdom of Kandy was an independent monarchy in the central portion of the island Ceylon, absorbed into the British empire in 1815. The Sinhalese writer Pa'nabokke Banda, President of Dumbara, obtained a copy of the original English manuscript, had it transcribed and made a rough translation. In 1876 Le Mesurier seized the ms, retranslated it and recast it into its present form. Both the transcription and the translation are found in this work. Rare. Provenance: Frederic Austin Hayley with his bookplate on front pastedown. Author of "A treatise of the laws and customs of the Sinhalese" Colombo 1923.
