This dictionary is the first significant English-Japanese vocabulary, the first edition of which predates Hepburn's Japanese - English dictionary by five years. This has been done in the second edition with the help of Yanagawa Sunsam, Tanaka Yosiwo and others. This edition is also enlarged with tables of irregular verbs, explained abbreviations and arbitrary characters. Cordier gives the date 1866 and the preface is also dated 1866. Cordier BJ 672.
