External wear minor to moderate with some splits & fraying at corners and ends. Minor amount of bubbling to the cloth covers. Small black ink stain back cover. Top edges gilt, fore-edges tanned. Dull black end-papers with only a stub remaining of ffep. Tight binding, but repairs have been made to crack at front hinge and complete separation at rear hinge. Name in pencil on blank page that backs up the frontis while interior pages a little smudging but mostly very clean. Top corners of first 20 or so pages light corner kink. One top corner fold-over within. One deep fore-edge tear repaired with archival paper tape (129/130, torn through a footnote on each page). 16 full-page plates, incl the frontis, but just a stub remains of an absent map at the front of the book. Index. Fair.
