They were originally created as columns for Lidové noviny. The book was written during a two-month stay of the writer in England in 1924. Capek describes his impressions of the British capital, its busy streets or well-kept parks, commenting on visits to London landmarks and trips to Cambridge and Oxford. There are also insights from a trip to Scotland and Wales, as well as brief portraits of the greats of English literature. Capek characterizes the English national character, draws attention to the cultural differences between the island empire and the old continent, and at the end expresses his respect for British democratic traditions. 373p. illus. plates, index maps on endpapers.
