Dover, NH, Printed by George Wadleigh, 1838. Wraps. Printed wraps. 31 pp. A sermon given by Pastor David Root, pastor of the Congregationalist Church in Dover, as well as one of the founders of the Anti-Slavery Society in Dover. Root reflects primarily on the history of the church in Dover, chronicling its establishment in 1638, its various leaders and parishioners, etc. Despite being anti-slavery and sympathetic with the plight of enslaved people, he reflects upon Native Americans as savages, who needed to be tamed along with the New England wilderness. He refers to the evil of slavery, while also embracing a manifest destiny doctrine when musing about Oregon or the Rocky Mountains, or a canal to be built across the isthmus of Darien. GOOD condition. Moderate toning, offsetting and some creasing to the covers, with minor soiling and staining. Heavy foxing to the first few pages, with some scattered foxing in the interior. Good .
