Book, Unpaginated [430], woodcut title and many woodcut illustrations, vignettes, borders by Eduard Bendemann, Julius H bner, Alfred Rethel, and C Stilke, directory of subscribers to rear. German text. Vellum binding, with gilt lining, decoration, titling to spine. Subscription copy of William Long MA, with his heraldic bookplate to front pastedown, and an additional title page( Monument to the Fourth secular celebration of the art of printing). Gauffered gilt edges all round. With the list of illustrations to the rear, a note from the publishers, dated 31 May 1841, explains the delay in the completion of the work and the cooperation of the illustrators Rethel and Stilke (not noted in the title). The list of subscribers includes, Humboldt, Dickens, Thackeray, Klenze, Bakunin, and Lenau. The vellum binding has some discolouration and soiling, there are small splits to the head and tail of the spine. Internally the front and rear hinge have small splits, there is a small bookseller label (Simms & Son, Bath), to the verso of the front endpaper, some spotting, more to prelims. and rear pages, but intermittently throughout.
